What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short, is the process of improving the visibility of a website in search engines like Google and Bing. The goal of SEO is to earn organic (or natural) traffic from search results. In other words, SEO helps your website rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs).

SEO is a broad topic, but there are three main pillars that all SEO strategies must stand on:

1. technical optimization

2. on-page optimization

3. off-page optimization

Let’s unpack each of these in more detail.

Technical Optimization Pillar #1: Technical Optimization

Technical optimization refers to the health and structure of your website’s code and infrastructure. In order for search engines to understand and index your site properly, your website must be well-built and free of errors. A few common technical SEO issues include duplicate content, broken links, and incorrect use of 301 redirects.

On-Page Optimization Pillar #2: On-Page Optimization

On-page optimization is all about optimizing your website’s content and design for both users and search engines. To optimize your website’s content, you need to choices keywords wisely and place them where they matter most—in titles, headlines, meta descriptions, and throughout the body of your text. You should also format your text using helpful headings and subheadings so that it’s easy to read. As for design, your website should have a clear hierarchy, be mobile-friendly, and use clean code.

Off-Page Optimization Pillar #3: Off-Page Optimization

Off-page optimization is everything you do to promote your website outside of your actual website. The most important part of off-page SEO is link building, or earning high-quality backlinks from other websites. Backlinks are important because they show search engines that your site is popular and trustworthy. Other off-page SEO activities include social media marketing and local citation building.

SEO can seem overwhelming at first, but it doesn’t have to be—as long as you focus on the three main pillars of technical optimization, on-page optimization, and off-page optimization, you’ll be on the right track.
